Section 8 Introduction

The Housing Choice Voucher Program, commonly referred to as "Section 8" or even "HUD" provides rental assistance for low income households who live in privately owned housing.

The program is funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and administered locally by the Marquette Housing Commission (MHC).

The program permits families more freedom in choosing units. The units must be located in Marquette County, which includes the cities Gwinn, Ishpeming, Negaunee, and Marquette to name a few. This allows them to receive assistance in a unit, in a location that works best for them. The rental assistance is tenant-based. This means that assistance is "tied" to the family and follows the family (as long as the eligibility is maintained).

The family pays approximately 30 percent of their monthly income as their share of the rent to the landlord. The MHC pays the landlord the remaining amount directly to the landlord. This is known as the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP).
