Marquette's Affordable Housing Program, Inc.

The Marquette Housing Commission, in recognition of the need for additional affordable housing in Marquette County and the restrictions placed on a public housing agency, chose to create a separate entity to take advantage of funding resources not otherwise available. This separate entity is Marquette's Affordable Housing Program, Inc.

Marquette's Affordable Housing Program, Inc. was established in 2005 as a private non-profit, 501(c)(3). This corporation is exclusively charitable, within the meaning of section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 or corresponding section of any future federal tax code, including to provide decent and affordable housing to persons of low income and to further needed affordable rental and homeownership opportunities for families, persons with disabilities and elderly.

It is governed by a five member board of directors who hold staggered terms. One of these five members is also a member of the Marquette Housing Commission Board, serving as a liaison between both entities. The organization meets monthly. Because it is a private non-profit the meetings are not open to the public. MAHPI has been working on several projects since its inception as identified in its Stategic Plan.

To open up other funding opportunities, MAHPI applied for and achieved its designation as a CHDO, Community Housing Development Organization. Consequently we are hereby certified for the Michigan HOME program administered by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority.

The Executive Director of the Marquette Housing Commission also serves as Director of Marquette's Affordable Housing Program, Inc. That person is Eric Erland, who has served as Director of the MHC since August 2010.
